“After not competitively running for 8 years, I knew I needed a coach. I was lucky to connect again with Joe. He took into consideration my strengths and helped me to improve my weaknesses. In the time that we have been working together, he took me from not competing to being able to run a 3:04:41 marathon within 9 months, and a 2:41:50 1 year after that. The proof speaks for itself. Best coach I’ve ever worked with, hands-down.”

“Coach Joe was my first running coach and is the person who got me interested in running. He saw that I had potential and encouraged me to strive for goals that I didn’t think I was capable of achieving. Through his encouragement and coaching I realized how important running was to me and I knew that I wanted to pursue a career in it. I have carried what Coach Joe has taught me throughout my running journey and I still do today. I am not only blessed to run for the best team in the Nation (North Carolina State University), but I get to do it alongside my sister who Coach Joe also inspired to start running. I dedicate a lot of my accomplishments and hard work to him, as he is what helped me find my love and passion for the sport.”

“Coach Joe was an integral part of my breaking 4 hours and running a Marathon PR after turning 40! His disciplined but flexible plan was great for my busy lifestyle. His dogged attention to my training was almost irritating, but necessary.”

“ Thinking of running a half marathon? I wasn’t either, it was not until a few months before my 30th birthday that the urge hit. When it did I have Coach Joe to thank for my sub two hour time. It’s not everyday you feel motivated to run 13.1 miles, but with his support and guidance I was able to make it happen. Now, I have the running bug— Coach Joe is helping me with my first 10k” ”

“Having the opportunity to run cross country and track at college has helped me realize that if I believe in myself, I can achieve things that I thought I would never accomplish. If it wasn’t for Coach Joe, I wouldn’t have had this opportunity or been able to achieve all of the accomplishments that I did at a collegiate level. Out of all the coaches I had, Coach Joe has pushed me the hardest and challenged me at a different level. He has also given the greatest results with his workouts and believed in me more than any other coach. I am grateful for having been coached by him and for everything he has done for me. Coach Joe is an excellent coach and will continue to be an inspiration to me throughout the rest of my running career.”

I decided to do a marathon with no previous experience training for a large running goal

in the past. Joe Carei formulated a plan utilizing data from my most recent workouts to develop a running plan that fit into my 50+ hour work/school week and progressed my training with noticeable improvements in my ability at the end of each week. The schedule was developed uniquely for me building from my heart rates and running times that I recorded and sent to him
each week. He added in a variety of dynamic workouts, stretches, and strength exercises that I could choose from as well so that I had some independence in my routine. Anytime I had a question about something in the workout plan, he was quick to clarify and would even call to checkup on how the plan was going. I experienced a physical setback with my Achilles (due to pushing my training against his recommendation) and he was able to accommodate rehabilitation with continued momentum toward my end goal of running an 8:45 for a full marathon. On the day of the marathon, I started off strong and was easily meeting my goal pace. However, mile 18 hit and I had gotten myself into the mindset of not being able to physically meet my time goal. Joe was there for me during this mental block. He paced me during this rough patch in the run when I wanted nothing more than to just through in the towel (or curse him out!). My goal was equally his goal and he made sure I was not alone in meeting it. My training officially started on August 21 st and by the marathon date on November 10 th I ran exactly an 8:45 pace. I cannot thank him enough for helping me to meet my goal for my first real marathon training experience!
Coach Joe has been an important part of my running career since I started running cross country in 8th grade. In high school, his training and advice helped me qualify for states, and he planted the seed that I could qualify for Nationals at the collegiate level. He has all the qualities I want in a coach. His high expectations, encouragement, goal-setting, and attention to all the details that make a difference in running – race strategy, form, drills, nutrition, hydration, sleep, stretching – have made me a better runner.

I can’t speak highly enough about Joe and his coaching methods. He is someone who is always available to answer questions and offer advice, he never lets you get complacent, and he always helps you set new goals and pushes you to reach them. He’s competitive and open-minded about learning new things.
Thanks to Joe’s coaching, I ran the Erie Marathon, where I qualified for the Boston Marathon.
I highly recommend Joe as a running coach for anyone, no matter their level of experience or ability.
As a runner and coach, I have tried to find and surround myself with people who are knowledgeable, encouraging, willing to help you whenever you need it, and always trying to get better at their craft. Coach Joe fits all of these characteristics to a tee.

I was fortunate enough to get to spend a track season coaching on his staff at Penn State Fayette, where I learned a lot about coaching, running, and life in general. I observed Joe as he carefully crafted a plan that would help push each of his athletes to run their best times. Joe clearly cares about each of the individuals that he coaches, regardless of how quickly, or slowly, they complete any given race. If a runner is invested in bettering themselves on the track, or the course, Joe will do everything he can to help them achieve their goals. He reaches out to his athletes to see how they are, regardless of if they are in the midst of a training cycle or just at home taking a break from running.
When it comes to his coaching methods, he is extremely knowledgeable, and explains what he is doing, and why, before having runners do a workout. When Joe explains what he is doing, he leaves his runners better equipped to handle their training and allows them to leave that day knowing more about the sport than they did whenever arrived. This wealth of knowledge and experience that Joe provides makes him the perfect coach for any athlete at any level. Getting to spend time coaching with Joe was one of the most influential and formative experiences of my twelve-year journey in the world of running. He is now my private coach.
